Match Report – Saturday, 17th May: Cam 3rds vs Quedgeley & Hardwicke at Tuffley Park
On Saturday, 17th May, the Cam 3rds made the trip to Tuffley Park to face Quedgeley & Hardwicke, who were our gracious hosts for the day.
After losing the toss, Quedgeley & Hardwicke chose to bat first.
Our opening bowling pair, Anthony Matthews and Alfie Davies, gave us a fantastic start. They tore through the top order, taking 5 wickets between them in the opening 14 overs. Davies bowled with real fire and energy, claiming 3 wickets, while Matthews kept things tight from the other end with 3 maidens and 2 wickets to his name. Their efforts put the opposition under early pressure as they struggled to build momentum.
Following up were Jason Brown and Will Saunders as the second-change bowlers. Brown maintained the pressure beautifully and was rewarded with 2 wickets during his tidy spell. Saunders also bowled a solid few overs from the other end, keeping things steady.
Next into the attack were Andy Casse and vice-captain Ethan Matthews. However, a few overs into his spell, Ethan unfortunately sustained a hand injury while bravely stopping a straight drive—his commitment saved a boundary but also ruled him out of the bowling attack. Captain Marlene Brown stepped in to complete the over and struck in her very next one, making an immediate impact.
Meanwhile, Andy Casse continued to bowl superbly, troubling the batters with his variation and picking up 2 well-earned wickets.
Our fielders were also in fine form. Ethan Matthews held onto a sharp catch in the covers, and wicketkeeper Ben Johnson claimed two catches behind the stumps.
Quedgeley & Hardwicke were eventually bowled out for 112, setting Cam a target of 113 to chase.
Opening the batting were vice-captain Graham Willcox and Matt Tipper, who got us off to a solid start before Tipper was dismissed for 6. In came Andy Casse, who began to build a promising partnership with Willcox, with both batters finding the boundary and rotating the strike nicely. Casse was later bowled for 9.
Next to the crease was the ever-reliable Jason Brown, known affectionately as “Mr No Average.” He and Willcox kept the scoreboard ticking along smoothly, taking us to the drinks break. Shortly after the interval, Willcox was dismissed for a well-made 30.
George Johnson joined Jason at the crease and contributed some stylish shots and excellent running between the wickets. With just 2 runs needed for victory, George unfortunately fell to a catch at mid-on, bringing skipper Marlene Brown to the middle.
It didn’t take long—Jason Brown sealed the win with a boundary, leading Cam to a six-wicket victory.
It was a fantastic all-round team performance from beginning to end. Spirits were high, the energy on the field was excellent, and everyone played their part with enthusiasm and support for each other.
