After a great start to the season for Cam CC 2nd XI, a few enforced changes were made for a trip to Ruardean Hill CC including skipper Adam Holloway. Therefore, captain for the day, Denis Booth took his side to the Forest of Dean hoping to continue the good work from the first three games.
Ruardean won the toss and elected to field first. Booth and Ben Lane opened up for Cam, looking to get a good start. However, Ruardean had the better start with little runs coming from the first ten overs but Cam for no loss. Runs soon started to flow especially for Booth who powered his way to 44 before cover driving aerially straight to Jayne at extra cover and departing just before the drinks interval.
Tom Deakin joined Lane and both got to work in order to get the innings going. Some boundaries followed off of the bad balls and the running between the wickets was good. Lane fell for 44 when he was trapped LBW just short of his half century.
The middle order of Ben Edwards (16), Dane Hall (27) and Lewis Baker (18) all took their turn in joining Deakin (75). They all did their job in supporting Deakin whilst doing a great job in adding to the score in no time. Some explosive batting from Hall and Baker especially really helped Cam along towards a really good total. Late wickets for Ruardean boosted them slightly however James Colborn and debutant Joe Pearson finished the innings strongly. Cam finished on 246-6 off of their 40 overs.
With overcast and chilly conditions, opening bowlers Baker and Pearson started the innings brightly with some movement to work with for both. Left handed opener Paul Weaving (82) started to attack and looked to rotate the strike well however with no constant partner at the other end for Weaving the job was made difficult for Ruardean.
A fantastic catch and even better direct hit run out from young G. Johnson set the example in the field for his team mates. He sealed a good 2XI team debut with a wicket after a stumping from Lane.
With the atmosphere off the pitch heating up, the Cam team held their nerve with some good bowling from Rice, Colborn, Viney and Hall in the middle and end of the innings. The key wicket being the dismissal of Weaving for 82 off the bowling of Dane Hall. Ruardean Hill finished on 214 – 8, short of the total set by Cam.
4 out of 4 for the 2nd’s and again a whole team effort to achieve the win and taking home the points. Cam 2nd XI play Eastcombe CC 1st XI at home next Saturday.
