Cam Sunday XI made the trip to Coalpit Heath to face their Sunday Development side. With only two players over the age of 20, the Sunday XI was full of youthful, up and coming players from our youth section. We lost the toss and we were put into bat. Things didn’t start off too great, with Joe Pearson being sent back to the club house without scoring in the first over. Wickets continued to fall with Johnson, Rowlands, Baker and Godbeer all joining Pearson. The opening bowling from the home side was tight and they continued to look to take wickets after L.Thompson had picked up three and had finished her spell. However, Ryan Malpass and W.Saunders got to work with the co-captain, Malpass, pressing on some runs next to his name. The pair looked good together with both rotating the strike and seeing off some good bowling still within the first ten overs of the innings. Malpass fell just after reaching 30 runs due to a mix up in communication and ended up run out. Ben Lane came out to join Saunders and they moved their way along to drinks without being troubled whilst making some runs. After drinks, Cam had to get the scoring rate going and made their way past 100 still for 6 wickets. Boundaries started to flow with Lane and Saunders both scoring well. Young Saunders started to look more and more comfortable as his innings went on. However, he eventually fell for 20 runs after keeping the innings together.This brought in B.Davies. Lane made his way to 50 on the 30 over mark and retired which brought in H.Rogers for his debut. Both U13 players pushed the ball around for a few overs before Rogers was bowled. Nigel Evans joined Davies and the pair were not together for long with Davies being bowled in the next over after some good resistance. Lane came back in and quickly picked up where left off. Quickly adding another 24 to his name with Nigel supporting at the other end with good running and good batting between the pair. Cam were bowled out when Evans had one pushed through his defences with Lane finishing on 74* and Cam finished on 156.
After the interval, Cam looked to take early wickets with young bowlers fronting the Cam attack. Cam were good in the field keeping things tight and picking up wickets regularly. Chris Williams batted his way to 50 and retired with Thompson and Metcalf trying to bat around him. This period for Coalpit Heath got them closer and closer to their target and made it look like an uphill climb for Cam in the field. Wicketkeeper Godbeer did brilliantly well behind the stumps keeping to first team bowler Pearson who went for 9 runs across his 6 picking up 2 wickets as well. Rowlands, Johnson and Davies all bowled well and kept the game alive for Cam. The game was in the balance and it went right down to the wire with 15 needed off the last 8 overs. Wickets were still falling with Lane and Pearson the two bowlers to try and win the game for Cam. Crucial wickets were taken by both of them including a fantastic catch from Godbeer. 6 were needed off the last with tail in and Williams to come back in. Down to the last ball, 3 required. The ball goes towards Davies he picks up calmly and throws to the bowler’s end for a run out for Cam to win. A fantastic effort particularly in the field and an enjoyable afternoon for the Sunday XI.
