Cam 1st XI 247-4 beat Redmarley 1st XI 234-5 by 13 runs
A brilliant all-round performance saw Cam bounce back from last weekend’s heavy defeat to secure a hard fought victory at home to Redmarley.
Having been sent in to bat, stand in captain Ryan Malpass and Sam Buck started well and began building a solid platform. Both men received lifelines as chances were missed by the fielding side, a theme throughout the innings, but Malpass capitalised as he reached his half century before departing for 52 as the opening partnership of 90 was finally broken.
Ben Whitemore was run out attempting a quick single and Ed Paddock caught attempting a big shot as both men fell for single figure scores. Cam welcomed back Gareth Udal for his first match of the season and he was soon into his stride as he accelerated the pace of the innings as Buck reached a 50 of his own.
The pair added 86 before Buck was caught behind for a patient 64 to leave Cam on 202-4 in the 39th over. Ben Dolbear joined Udal and the pair continued to up the ante in the final overs with Udal also reaching a half century. The pair remained unbeaten with Udal (55) and Dolbear (26) guiding their side to 247-4.
Cam’s opening bowlers George Dolling and Alex Atkinson started things off well and Atkinson made the early breakthrough as he trapped Ayland LBW without scoring. Jonny Hayward and Chris Browning continued to keep things tight with Hayward also picking up a wicket LBW with Holland departing for 30 to leave Redmarley on 63-2.
From there a partnership of 117 between Trouw and Stow saw Redmarley make steady progress towards their target. The required run rate was hovering at around a gettable sixes and sevens an over for large parts of the innings but Whitemore wrestled back the initiative for the home side as he made the key double breakthrough. Firstly he removed the dangerous Stow for 70, with Buck taking the catch at point, before trapping the new batsman LBW from the next delivery to leave the score on 181-4 with 9 overs to go.
A big over of 17 gave Redmarley renewed belief as the equation was reduced to 42 from 30 balls but Dolling returned to the attack and conceded just 8 from his two overs to ensure Cam remained in control. This meant 20 were required from the final over and Udal continued his tight spell and finally removed Trouw, bowled for 98, as Cam closed out a hard-earned victory by 13 runs.
